TRAVERSE CITY — A Kalkaska man is set to stand trial in 13th Circuit Court after he was accused of breaking into a Maple City home and stealing a safe.

Nicholas Cory Perkins, 23, faces felony home invasion charges and up to 15 years.

Another man involved in the incident, Taylor Yaster, 22, of Traverse City, pleaded guilty to entry without breaking, according to the Leelanau County Sheriff’s blog.

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report in February that someone broke into a Cleveland Township home. The resident reported a safe with $1,200 in cash and other valuables was missing.

“It was a day-time break-in at a home,” said Leelanau county Sheriff’s Lt. Clint Kerr. “They stole the safe, took it to Grand Traverse County and busted it open.”

The safe was discovered in Grand Traverse County, and many of its contents were found in Yaster’s former residence, according to court documents.

Kerr said deputies placed Perkins at the scene after many interviews with suspects. He said that the suspects knew about the safe because they knew of the victim’s son.
