TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West didn’t need seven overtimes Wednesday.
Instead, the Titans scored three third-period goals to beat Manistee 4-1 in a Division 1 regional hockey game at Howe Arena, two nights after an historic 2-1 seven-overtime win over the Bay Reps.
Nick Schultz celebrated his 18th birthday with two goals and an assist for the 12-15 Titans, who will play Grand Rapids West Catholic at 2 p.m. Saturday in Big Rapids for the regional title. West Catholic beat Northview 6-4.
West outshot Manistee 16-4 in the first period in taking a 1-0 lead. Schultz netted the goal at the 4:52 mark with Ashton Lawton assisting.
Manistee tied the game in the second when Jacob Harrie scored a power play goal.
West then put it away in the third. Lawton scored the game-winner with 10:36 to go off assists from Michael Lake and Erik Anton. John Linenger made it 3-1 with 2:27 to go when Schultz chipped the puck out of the zone to Jake Saxton, who led a 2 on 1 break. He fed Linenger for the goal. Schultz scored an empty-netter with 18 seconds remaining. John and Jeff Linenger drew assists.
Brandon Lacharite was in goal. West outshot Manistee 35-17.
“Brandon didn’t have to make a ton of saves, but they did have some grade A opportunities,” Titans coach Jeremy Rintala said.
