TRAVERSE CITY — Five northwest Michigan wineries recently brought home awards from the 36th annual Michigan Wine Competition.

The 450 wines entered in the competition from 102 Michigan wineries were narrowed to winners in six categories Aug. 6 in East Lansing by 25 experts, according to competition officials. The group, including winemakers and Master Sommeliers narrowed the entries to a small group of 42 wines which won gold medal and a smaller group of six which won “best of class” awards.

Five of the six wines which won top awards hale from northwest Michigan wineries.

They are:

2012BeDazzled, a sparkling wine from Black Star Farms

2012 Pinot Blanc, a dry white from Chateau Fontaine

2011 Cabernet Franc, a dry red from Peninsula Cellars

2012 Knot Too Sweet, a Riesling from Boathouse Vineyards

2011 Dry Ice, a Riesling ice wine from Brys Estate.

East Jordan luau

EAST JORDAN — Downtown East Jordan is planning a Summer Luau Party and Sidewalk Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16. Activities include a yard sale and karaoke at the Community Center, business open houses and breakfast, lunch and dinner specials at downtown restaurants.

Breathe Owl Breathe will perform Music in the Park from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Park bandshell.
