Guidelines for Record-Eagle business coverage

We realize how important media coverage of a business can be and we are greatly expanding our business coverage at the Record-Eagle.

We try to establish a level playing field for everyone and the best way to do that is to work within a set of guidelines.

New businesses:

When a new business opens, we will cover this exciting event. We at a minimum will run a photo and caption that explains what the business is, who the owners are, their location and phone number. New business owners should contact the newspaper and arrange for coverage.

Business profiles:

If a business has been open for a more than a year and is realizing success or going through significant change, such as an expansion or new product line, we may write a business profile which would appear as an article with a picture.

Business briefs:

These short items usually run in the Sunday paper and highlight an event or other newsworthy items. They usually are a few paragraphs long and can include but are not limited to announcements, events, and awards, business contributions and donations to charities, seminars, conventions and other business news.

Business memoranda:

Business memoranda appear in the Wednesday business section and offer businesses, nonprofits and other entities the chance to announce promotions, hirings and other brief announcements.

The Record-Eagle encourages photo submissions to accompany a memoranda announcement submission.

For example, if John Smith was recently promoted at a business, you are encouraged to also send a photo of Smith via email in with your submission.

The Record-Eagle prefers jpg files but can also handle bmp and pdf submissions.

DO NOT embed photos in email or Microsoft files because we cannot retrieve them. Instead, simply send them as attached files.

The ideal size for photos is at least 1,000 pixels.

To request business coverage please contact Business Editor Glenn Puit at 231-933-1467 or email him at

For business memoranda submissions and related photos, send them via email directly to the email address with a reference to business memoranda in the email subject line.
