BEULAH -- A spry Inland Township man, 61, nabbed a would-be burglar who’s only one-third the victim’s age.
The man discovered Jamie Paul Gary, 23, inside his home early this week, then grappled with and subdued the accused thief, said Benzie County sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Troy Lamerson.
“A short struggle ensued and (the victim) struck Mr. Gary several times and was able to detain him,” Lamerson said. “I understand (the victim) is in pretty good shape.”
Gary was charged with home invasion and larceny of a firearm. He faces up to 15 years in jail and is being held in Benzie County’s jail on a $100,000 bond.
The victim arrived home Monday night and immediately noticed a chair was out of place. He told a friend to call 911 while he went inside, Lamerson said.
The victim discovered Gary in a bedroom, where they scuffled, Lamerson said.
Several items were missing, including a hand gun and a long gun, Lamerson said.
Authorities said the victim later found the missing firearms, as well as a large-screen television, fishing equipment, tools and other valuables, in a wooded area near his house. Lamerson said a relative of Gary’s lived nearby.
“I can only theorize he was moving them out so he could pick them up at a later time,” Lamerson said.
Gary told police he was homeless, but Lamerson suspects he lives in the Bendon area.
Authorities continue to investigate.
