Central boys take 3rd in D-1

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Traverse City Central’s boys tied their best post-split cross country placing, taking third in Division 1 Saturday.

“They posted the results on the window,” Central coach John Lober said. “And I could hardly breathe up until that point. I really wasn’t sure how we were going to be. I knew we had three guys in there, but I was wondering where four and five really were in the place finish. So when they put the results on the window, I was thinking we were anywhere from 10th to hopefully first — and not knowing. ... Then I saw us third, and I said, ‘My gosh, 15 points out of winning the whole thing.’ It was just a great feeling that came over me that the kids ran their hearts out and they were that close to being the best team in Michigan in a very good, very competitive field.”

The Trojans’ only better finish was in 1996, when Central and West were still unified. That’s also the last time Traverse City’s boys had three all-staters in one season.

Senior Kyle Dotterrer closed out his high school cross country career with an effort that earned him his all-state honor. He placed fourth in 15:44.0.

“Finally, right?” Dotterer said. “It’s only a one-second P.R., but I’ll take it. It’s the best one of my life. I’m the most proud of it, that’s for sure.”

His time led the team in what he obviously knew would be his last as a Trojan.

“I tried not to get all sentimental beforehand, but that feeling was there and in the back of my mind the whole time,” Dotterrer said. “I had to give it all I’ve got.”

Central’s girls finished sixth in an incredibly tough division that featured loads of teams that will be included in the national rankings.
