Prep Sports Roundup: TCC top runners earn medals

Traverse City Central had all five of its top runners medal — the top 50 runners earned medalist honors — as the Trojans finished third out of 32 teams at Saturday’s Portage Invitational.

Rockford, ranked 19th nationally, and Saline, fifth nationally, both finished ahead of the Trojans, with Rockford scoring 62 points, Saline 84 and Central scoring 124.

Ashley Ko led Central with an eighth-place finish (18:30). Molly Peregrine was 16th in 18:55. Central’s other scorers were: Graceanne Tarsa in 21st (19:08), Joe Reist in 38th (19:42) and Emmalyne Tarsa in 41st (19:48). Hannah Keyser (52nd, 20:00) and Courtney Stewart (126th, 21:13) rounded out Central’s varsity runners.

“I’m pretty happy with the point spread,” said TC Central coach Lisa Taylor. “They are definitely reachable — those two teams (Rockford and Saline). We can run even better. I’m happy with the results.”

Traverse City West finished 17th with 380 points. The Titans were led by Jessica Gockley’s 17th-place time (18:59). Emily O’Leary was second for West in 60th place (20:14).

Central had a good showing in the junior varsity race as it had 14 of the top 50 runners. Central’s top finishers in the JV race were: Katie Moses (1st, 19:41); Jordan Matterella (2nd, 19:54), Kalina Pfannenstiel (3rd, 20:12); Maddy Basch (5th, 20:44); Erin Lipp (9th, 20:58); Lauren Bruno (10th, 21:03); Lauren Marsh (11th, 21:04); Ellie Taylor (17th, 21:24); Grace Sailor (24th, 21:35); Clare Sorace (26th, 21:37); Hayley Padden (27th, 21:40); Zoe Derstle (42nd, 22:02); Zita Hafner (44th, 22:06); and Annie Botsford (50th, 22:15).

TC Central 11th, TC West 13th at Portage

Traverse City Central finished 11th and Traverse City West was 13th out of 36 teams at the Portage Invitational.

Central was running without two of its top four runners in Kyle Dotterrer and Keefer Edwards, who were not able to compete. Cam McAuliffe led the Trojans with a 13th-place finish (16:13), while Anthony Berry was 15th in 16:15. Jordan Query (87th, 17:25), Graham Bevier (119th, 17:42) and Spencer Schulte (124th, 17:44) were the other Central scorers.
