A post-flood timeline

TRAVERSE CITY -- Charlie Frye’s flood story is just one of many. Last year’s breach at Brown Bridge Dam swamped 66 properties. Here is a brief timeline of key events since last year’s flood:

* Nov. 8, 2012: Angry flood victims unloaded their frustrations on leaders of the Brown Bridge Dam Removal project. Three Traverse City police officers appeared about 40 minutes into the meeting. AMEC engineer Don Chandler said the company was doing everything it could to reimburse homeowners as soon as possible, including putting pressure on involved insurance companies.

* March 2013: AMEC, lead contractor on the Brown Bridge Dam removal, assumes liability for the project. Michigan Department of Environmental Quality investigation of what caused the breach continues.

* May 2013: A group of five property owners along Boardman Plains Road filed suit against AMEC, Molon Excavating, and the Board River Dams Settlement Agreement Implementation Team. Boardman Pond residents Ronald and Landa Alpers also filed suit against Grand Traverse County and the other same defendants, seeking at least $250,000 for lost property values. They also requested a court order to re-flood the pond and reconstruct the river along their property.

*June 2013: The Boardman Plains Road residents’ lawsuit is moved to federal court

* Sept. 2013: A City of Traverse City attorney requested the 13th Circuit Court to dismiss the dam removal implementation team from the lawsuit and rule that plaintiffs sue each team member individually. Judge Philip Rodgers denied the request.
