Events at Horizon

TRAVERSE CITY — Horizon Books of Travese City will host the following book signing this week:

• Steve Hamilton, author of “Let it Burn,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, July 5.

• David Burch, author of “Pocket Full of Dreams, from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 5.

• Cynthia Ellingsen, author of “Marriage Matters,” from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

‘Chickadees’ program

TRAVERSE CITY — The Village at Bay Ridge Book Club will present Bill O. Smith and his book, “Chickadees at Night,” illustrated by local artist Charles R. Murphy, at 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 8.

The Book Club Luncheon event will take place in the Bay Ridge West Building Dining Room at 3950 Scenic Ridge. A light luncheon of quiche and fruit salad with ice cream sundaes will be served.

Space is limited and a reservation with prepayment of $6 is required by July 5. Call 932-9455 to reserve your place or for more information.

Park signing

EMPIRE — The National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host a book signing with Anna Egan Smucker, author of the children’s book, “To Keep The South Manitou Light,” from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center.

Smucker was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and grew up in Weirton, W.V..A former children’s librarian and teacher, she is the recipient of numerous awards for her books, including the 1990 International Reading Association Children’s Book Award in the Young Reader’s Category for “No Star Nights,” and the 2006 Michigan Historical Society Award of Merit for “To Keep the South Manitou Light.”

Book prize

NEW YORK — A $100,000 prize for military writing has been awarded to an author of fiction.

Tim O’Brien, known for books such as “The Things They Carried” and “In the Lake of the Woods,” has received the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award.
