---- — Two new tech applications will help locals and visitors alike find places to hike, paddle, ski or swim or figure out where and when recreation events are being held.

The old “I don’t have anything to do” just got even more lame.

A new smartphone application called “Experience 231” will help. Users will be able to choose an activity, from hiking, biking, paddling, swimming and snowshoeing to birding — and find the best fit for themselves among 300 free local outdoor experiences.

It sorts results by time or special considerations like disabilities, equipment rental or pets.

Seven environmental groups spent about a year producing the app, which was developed by Lake Effect Associates. It will be available in soft release May 1 for Apple and Android phones, and fully active May 19.

The recently launched Grand Traverse Parks and Recreation Network website compiles information about events and activities involving 24 member organizations, from Camp Daggett to the Grand Traverse Rugby Club.

The aim is to make it easier for the public to take advantage of recreation resources and for the site to be a one-stop shop to figure out what local events are going on and how to participate

The site can be accessed by computer or smart phone at
