Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — TRAVERSE CITY — The Record-Eagle won six individual and newsroom-wide awards in the 2012 Michigan Associated Press Media Editors contest.
The Record-Eagle competes in the APME’s Division II Category for newspapers with a daily circulation of 15,001 to 50,000. Members of the Illinois Press Association judged the competition.
Winning entries include:
General Excellence, Third Place;
Best Public Service — Second Place, “Rash of sex offenses in Northern Michigan schools,” coverage led by local news editor Glenn Puit;
Best Sports Enterprise — Traverse City Record-Eagle, Third Place, “Title IX” anniversary coverage package by Sports editor Dennis Chase;
Best Sports — Traverse City Record-Eagle, Second Place, “Iceman Cometh 2012,” a deadline special section with reporting led by Dennis Chase and photographed by Jan-Michael Stump;
Best News Column — First Place, “Memory box opens the floodgates,” by Marta Hepler Drahos.
Best Editorial — Traverse City Record-Eagle, First Place, “Judge’s poor decisions should cost him his post,” by Mike Tyree.
Photojournalist Jan-Michael Stump also recently was named Record-Eagle parent company CNHI’s “Photographer of the Year” in a company-wide contest.
