History buffs meet

ELK RAPIDS — Short’s Brewing Company Founder and CEO Joe Short will share “The History of Beer” at the next meeting of the Elk Rapids Historical Society.

Short will discuss the origins of fermented malt beverages, beer’s coming of age in 15th Century Europe and the renaissance of craft beer in the U.S. since the 1980s.

His program starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Elk Rapids Historical Museum, 301 Traverse St. The public is welcome.

A suggested donation of $5 for adults and $2 for students younger than 18 is requested.

Proceeds benefit the historical society’s building preservation.

Arts classes

PETOSKEY — Registration is under way for fall classes at Crooked Tree Arts Center, 461 E. Mitchell St.

The art center’s eight-week courses have been designed to fit in with area schools’ academic calendars.

In addition to the eight-week session of classes, Crooked Tree is introducing a two-week “Winter Intersession” group of classes to run the first two weeks of December.

Also included in the fall line-up is a beginning Irish Ceili workshop.

Entries sought

TRAVERSE CITY — The Minervini Group has issued a call for entries for an upcoming art exhibit.

“Barre Chords to Mixer Boards: Music is Art” is a multi-media group show that will run from Friday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 1, in the North Mercato at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. An artist reception will be held during the Village’s First Friday event on Oct. 4.

Lecture series set

TRAVERSE CITY — A series of world-class garden lectures will be held to benefit construction of the Walled Garden at Traverse City’s new Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park.
