AVON, Ohio — Scott Dunn and Matt Miller combined to shut out the Lake Erie Crushers as the Traverse City Beach Bums won 8-0 to win Game 1 of their Frontier League playoff series.
The Beach Bums held a 3-0 after four innings, but padded that with five more runs in the final three frames.
Game 2 is today in suburban Cleveland before the series returns to Traverse City for Game 3 Tuesday.
Dunn — who was 15-1 in the regular season — went 6.2 innings, allowing only five hits and two walks. Miller added 2.1 frames of scoreless relief work, giving up just two hits and one walk while striking out two.
Lake Erie’s Dave Middendorf took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Zach Kometani started Traverse City’s scoring with a solo home run in the second, with Ryan Still tacking on an RBI double in the third and Chase Burch leading off the fourth with a solo homer to give Dunn a 3-0 lead to work with.
In the seventh, Sean Gusrang belted a two-run double to score Burch and Carlo Testa. The Bums then padded the lead with three more in the ninth on a Kometani RBI double, Marcus Nidiffer reaching on an error that brought in Kometani and a Scott Woodward RBI double.
