Grand Haven beats TC West

West finishes strong after difficult start

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Haven completed a two-game, two-day sweep in its Traverse City tour Saturday afternoon with a 48-33 non-conference basketball win over Traverse City West.

The Buccaneers beat Traverse City Central 67-28 Friday night.

Grand Haven opened a 25-5 lead at half. It was 38-15 after three quarters before West, playing in its opener, whittled away at the deficit.

"We battled them," Titans coach Dave Ginsberg said. "We made some progress (in second half). We finished strong and that's a good sign.

"That's a good team we played."

Grand Haven won the Class A state title last season and is ranked in the top five in pre-season polls.

Abby Cole, a 6-5 center who's committed to Michigan in volleyball, led the Buccaneers with 14 points.

Sophomore Katie Placek posted a double-double for West with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She sprained an ankle late in the game and her status for Tuesday's home clash with Midland is uncertain. Kimmy Bilinski added 11 points for the Titans.

Grand Haven won the JV game 39-15. Jodi Turnquist and Kari Cannon led the Titans with four points apiece.

The Buccaneers won the freshman game 51-20. Makenna Mattson netted seven for West.
