Surgery for girl mauled by raccoon

ROYAL OAK — A West Michigan girl whose face was mauled by a pet raccoon when she was a baby has had her final major surgery.

MLive.com and WOOD-TV report Saturday that the procedure on 10-year-old Charlotte Ponce (PON'-say) was performed Friday at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, north of Detroit.

It was her fifth operation and involved shaping and contouring Charlotte's damaged nose. She is expected to be discharged from the hospital Saturday. Her surgeon plans to reconstruct Charlotte's right ear next summer.

The raccoon attacked the girl in 2002 in her crib while her biological parents lived near Ravenna, about 15 miles east of Muskegon. The raccoon was later destroyed.

She was adopted by her great-aunt and great-uncle in 2005 after Michigan terminated the biological parents' rights.

5 teens arrested after spree

SOUTH HAVEN — Five southwest Michigan teenagers have been arrested after more than a dozen car windows and windows at some South Haven businesses were shattered.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department says Saturday that damages top $12,000.

Deputies were investigating a report of five people behaving suspiciously about 9:30 p.m. Friday outside a South Haven store when complaints began pouring in to the department that numerous vehicle windows had been shot out. Display windows at two shops also were destroyed.

Two vehicles in nearby Geneva Township also were damaged, but a witness was able to give a description of the suspects' car and possible license plate number to police.

Officers later arrested four 17-year-old males and a 17-year-old female on malicious destruction of property charges. Five pellet guns also were recovered.
