Cottage Coffee

TRAVERSE CITY — Karen Schmidt, chair of the Botanical Garden Society of Northwest Michigan, will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, May 13, Cottage Coffee.

Schmidt will talk about the Botanic Gardens at historic Barns Park at 10 a.m. at Hawthorn Cottage at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, off South Elmwood Avenue. The program is free and open to the public. For details, call 932-3027.

Artist talk

GLEN ARBOR — Glen Arbor Art Association's Artist-In-Residence program started its 13th season May 4, with Linda Beeman, an Owosso resident specializing in Japanese woodblock printing.

During her residency, Beeman plans to sketch, paint and photograph imagery to translate into carved wood blocks. She will discuss her work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Glen Arbor Art Association, 6031 S. Lake St. The program is free and open to the public.

The work generated as a result of her residency will be exhibited in August at Center Gallery at Lake Street Studios in Glen Arbor and in Japan as part of the "Art From The Lakes" exhibition in Tokyo and Shiga.

Forum on Asia

TRAVERSE CITY — The International Affairs Forum lecture series continues on Thursday, May 15, with a program titled "The Pivot to Asia" by Rear Admiral (ret.) Alexander Miller.

Miller retired from the U.S. Navy after a 33-year career in intelligence. In his final tour of duty, he was the Chief of Staff, post 9/11, of the National Security Agency.

The program starts at 6 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center, 1410 College Dr. For details, visit

Children's Garden plant sale

TRAVERSE CITY — Children's Garden volunteers will hold a plant sale to help the garden, located behind the Traverse Area District Library, be successful this season.
