In Northern Living: A Mother's Love

TRAVERSE CITY — Carol Clous made a mother’s choice.

She long ago chose to fight for her daughter’s life, no matter the cost. It’s a fight that might soon cost the long-time nurse and mother of two her job and home.

Five years ago Clous’ daughter, Kelsey, 21, was diagnosed with an unknown blood clotting disorder. Since then, she’s been in and out of hospitals and underwent a spate of life-saving surgeries. Clous’ quest to save Kelsey’s life built an insurmountable heap of medical bills along the way.

Mother and daughter thought things were going their way until a few weeks ago. Carol Clous learned Kelsey’s illness returned, just days after she received word she’ll lose her house to foreclosure.

This Mother’s Day, Clous sits in a hotel room near the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., alongside her sick daughter. She hopes the next treatment will save Kelsey’s life.
