Public input for Buffalo Ridge Trail
TRAVERSE CITY — Public input is being sought for the proposed second phase of the Buffalo Ridge Trail.
The Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails, in partnership with Garfield Township, will hold a public meeting at 6 pm. on Monday, June 24, at the Garfield Township Hall.
The first phase of the Buffalo Ridge Trail opened in Novembr, 2011. It connects the Commons to West Middle School. The second phase will connect the school to the new YMCA off Silver Lake Road. The trail will link into a new system of trails in Garfield Township that provides access to residential neighborhoods, schools, parks and office/retail centers.
TART Trails raised funds for and is facilitating the preliminary trail design, which has been contracted to Wade Trim, a local design and engineering firm. The input meeting will give the public a chance to share ideas, opportunities and concerns. Representatives from TART, Garfield Township, and Wade Trim will be on hand.

Rays pitcher Cobb leaves on stretcher
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after it appeared he was hit near the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City’s Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game.
Cobb put a hand on his head after being struck. Trainers from both teams and other medical staff immediately ran onto the field.
Cobb could be seen kicking his legs while being examined on the mound.
Players on both teams had hands on their hands as a stunned silence overtook Tropicana Field after the crowd grasped when Cobb was struck.
It came a month after Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ was also struck by a liner against the Rays and suffered a skull fracture.
Oilers prospect drowns in Latvia
EDMONTON, Alberta — The Edmonton Oilers have confirmed that prospect Kristians Pelss has died. He was 20.
The Oilers released a statement Saturday saying the team was deeply saddened by the loss of Pelss, who went missing Tuesday and was feared drowned in a river near his home in Riga, Latvia.
Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish said in a statement: “This is the news we feared. Kristians was an outstanding man and we feel terrible he has left us at such a young age. I can’t imagine how painful this situation is for the Pelss family.”
Pelss arrived home in Riga on Monday after playing last season with Edmonton’s top minor-league team, the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.
He was drafted by the Oilers in the seventh round in 2010.
