— Financing options

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City SCORE is offering a workshop, “Financing Your Business Start-Up,” for entrepreneurs who are interested in financing options for new or existing businesses.

The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, in the McGuire Community Room at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. The workshop is free, but registration is required. To register, visit or by calling SCORE at 888-796-4913.

ELK RAPIDS — The Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce March “Business after Hours” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, hosted by the Evergreen Market at 8066 US 31 North between Elk Rapids and Acme.

Grand opening

TRAVERSE CITY — Old Mission Traders will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday, March 16, to introduce a new look, new artisan foods and expanded product lines.

Formerly The Cherry Stop, Old Mission Traders opened in early February, after moving into and renovating their new space at 215 East Front.

Mini-MBA program

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce, along with Ferris State University, will offer a new Mini MBA program.

The nine-month program, exclusively for Chamber members, revolves around the common language and analytical tools of business. Courses are presented in an abbreviated format to provide a clear understanding of financial objectives and measurement metrics.

Beginning in September, the class is limited to 20 enrollees. Tuition is $2,000 and participants must have a bachelor’s degree. Call 947-5075 or email

Skills training

TRAVERSE CITY — A “Just in Time” training program organized by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments will teach fundamentals of machine operation.

The basic machining class is being offered through Northwestern Michigan College. A mandatory orientation session for the training will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 21, at the Traverse City Michigan Works! Service Center, 1209 South Garfield.

Anyone interested in the training can reserve a spot at the mandatory orientation session and see if they’re eligible to receive the training at no cost by calling 922-3747.

The program will include hands-on and classroom training from 5 to 9 p.m. two evenings per week for seven weeks, beginning April 22 at the NMC Machine Tool Lab.

Workshop set

TRAVERSE CITY — The Employer Training Council is hosting a Contractor and Worker Classifications workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 19, at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City. The workshop will focus on developing policies and best practices for classifications and exemptions for contractors and workers.

Featured experts at the workshop include Susan Rahn, an IRS stakeholder liaison; Michael McPherson, owner and president of HR That Works 4 U Solutions; and Janis Adams, an employment law attorney with Smith, Haughey, Rice & Roegge.

Registration is $40 per person and includes breakfast. Check-in and breakfast run from 8 to 8:30 a.m.
