Pinch hitter's single gives Schaumburg win over Bums

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Pinch hitter Bobby Martin's two-out single drove in two runs to give Schaumburg a 10-9 walk-off win over Traverse City in Frontier League action Saturday night.

Traverse City had rallied in the top of the inning to take a 9-8 lead.

The Beach Bums strung together a streak of seven of eight batters reaching bases in the seventh inning, scoring five times in the process. Five of those base runners had hits.

Marcus Nidiffer was hit by a pitch and Ryan Still walked. Scott Woodward singled in Nidiffer, Taylord Wrenn doubled in Still and Vargas singled in Woodward. Carloa Testa delivered a two-run single to bring home Wrenn and Vargas and put Traverse City in a 6-2 lead. The Boomers would counter with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the eighth, the first three batters reached base as Matt Miller left without recording an official out, despite striking out a batter. Jordan Dean reached after striking out swinging when Miller's pitch was wild. One run had already come in on a Brian McConkey RBI double, and Schaumburg would go on to score four in the inning.

Traverse City mounted a two-out rally in the ninth to take the lead back.

Testa and Zach Kometani walks and both came in on Sean Gusrang's double. Nidiffer followed with another double to plate Gusrang with the go-ahead run.

Schaumburg scored first in the opening inning on Jordan Dean's fielder's choice to bring in Frank Pfister. Chad Mozingo came in on a third-inning Steve McQuail sacrifice fly.

The Beach Bums cut into the lead on back-to-back sixth-inning doubles by Carlo Testa and Kometani with two out.
