Prep Sports Roundup: West advances to semifinals

MIDLAND — Traverse City West is headed back to the boys soccer state semifinals for the third time in school history — the first since 2006.

The Titans (16-6-3) are returning to the semis after a 1-0 overtime victory over Rochester Adams on Saturday at Midland Community Stadium.

It was West’s third consecutive victory in extra time. The Titans were coming off an overtime victory over Walled Lake Central on Tuesday and won the district championship by topping Saginaw Heritage 2-1 in a shootout.

West got the win on an Alex Patten goal with one minute left in the first overtime. The Titans then held off the Highlanders over the next 11 minutes of play.

“It was just a defensive mistake on their end and we were able to get a breakaway,” said West head coach Jason Carmien. “They just got a bad bounce and Alex took advantage.”

Adams put eight shot on goal for West goalie Justin Kraft. The Titans had five shots.

West moves on to Wednesday’s Division I semifinal against Bloomfield Hills, which beat Utica 2-1 in a regional final on Friday. game will be played in Midland, West’s third postseason game there.

“It’s been nice to be able to split travel with the metro Detroit teams,” said Carmien. “We have a two-hour drive instead of a four-hour drive. It’s a little easier for us.”

“I’m just proud of our players. They worked really hard,” Carmien added. “This team is peaking. We’re just enjoying a nice tournament run.”
