Building permit numbers spike

TRAVERSE CITY — Ted Kunnath sees first-hand what many in the construction industry are discussing: a spike in demand for new residential construction in the Grand Traverse region.

“We are definitely noticing an increase,” said Kunnath, owner of TK Builders in Traverse City. “I have three new houses starting for the fall and a commercial remodel to start, and an addition remodel in Honor.

“It’s definitely an increase in the amount of inquiries and the people who are actually going through to the building process.”

Building permits issued in Grand Traverse County skyrocketed in recent months, a 26 percent leap from 2012 levels. That’s exciting news for many in the construction industry, considering the sector is a hub for regional jobs.
