Antrim woman dead after accident

FROM STAFF REPORTS

— CUSTER — An Antrim County woman died after her snowmobile crashed into a logging truck in Custer Township.

The woman, her husband and son on Friday were riding separate snowmobiles on Smith Lake Road, off Alden Highway. She was leading them up a knoll in the road when she crashed into a truck heading the opposite direction about 2:30 p.m., said Sheriff Daniel Bean.

"When she got to the top, there was the truck coming the other way," Bean said. "She had nowhere to go."

The others were not injured.

Authorities weren't immediately sure of the victim's residence. Her name was withheld pending notification of family.

Smith Lake Road is a seasonal road and is not plowed by the road commission. The logging company partially plows it, Bean said.

The Michigan State Police motor carrier division is investigating the crash because it involved a semi truck driver with a commercial driver's license.

"It's really hard to say who's going to be, if anyone's going to be, at fault," Bean said.
