West’s Priante headed to regionals

GRAND HAVEN — Traverse City West freshman Vincent Priante qualified for regionals, notching his 40th win of the season in the process in Division 1 districts at Grand Haven.

Priante was 3-1 on the day to place third in the 103-pound weight class. He's 40-8 on the season and is headed to next weekend's individual regionals at Grandville.

Fellow Titan Caleb Kase scored one of the day's bigger upsets, pinning No. 1-seeded Tyler Sisco of Grandville in the second period to knock Sisco out of the individual tournament. Kase wasn't able to advance out of the 140-pound bracket, though, going 1-2 to end the season with 25 wins.

Jonah Jasman (119) picked up a win at 119 to finish the season with 32 wins, and James Peck's win at 215 was his 30th of the season.

Regionals are Saturday at Grandville.


St. Francis moves 5 wrestlers to regionals

Five Traverse City St. Francis wrestlers earned regional berths at Saturday's Division 4 individual district at Manton.

Zach Schaub (119 pounds) and Matt Mawby (130) each had 2-1 records on the day to place second in their weight classes, while Eric Wales (112) and Jake Khoury (285) were 3-1 to place third.

Individual regionals are Saturday at Rogers City, and the Gladiators will also participate in team regionals Thursday at Pine River, taking on Sanford-Meridian in the first round.

Elks send 5 to regionals

Five Elk Rapids wrestlers are headed to individual regionals after placing at the Division 3 district in Negaunee.

Kaid Brookshire (140 pounds) and Marcus Shananaquet (171) won their weight classes, each going 3-0 in the process. Brookshire ran his record to 37-4, while Shananaquet is 5-0.

Jarod Selby (119) took third, going 3-1 to improve to 29-15.

Chris Gillisie (152) and Jose Salmeron (103) each placed fourth with 2-2 marks. Gillissie is 25-17 and Salmeron 30-15 this season.

The Elks move on to individual regionals Saturday at Kingsley, but head to team regionals Wednesday at Grayling after winning last week's Kalkaska team district with wins over Benzie Central and the Blazers.

Two Warriors move on

Forest Area had a pair of wrestlers qualify for regionals at Saturday's Division 4 individual district at Manton.

Matthew Elliott was 2-1 with two pins at 125 pounds to place second. His record is 41-4 for the season.

Tyler Leffingwell was 2-2 at 130 to take fourth. His season mark is 36-10.

Individual regionals are Saturday at Rogers City.


TC Christian      64 LL St. Mary's      46

Kris Crosby scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Traverse City Christian to a 64-46 Cherryland Conference win over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

David Bump added 12 points for the Sabres, while Kevin Mannes grabbed eight boards and Jesse Heerdt and A.J. Weber each dished out four assists.

Mike Farese led St. Mary's with 15 points and Brandon McSawby had 13.

TC Christian (8-4, 4-0 Cherryland) hosts Leland on Tuesday.


TC Central      57 G.R. Ottawa Hills      42

Tyler Rawlings led Traverse City Central with 16 points as the Trojans knocked off Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills in non-conference play.

Jesse Hiemstra added 15 and Claire Young 10 for Central (3-11), which held Ottawa Hills (5-11) under 10 points in three of four quarters.

The Trojans host Gaylord for a rescheduled game Tuesday.

Central (9-5) won the JV game 42-33, led by Kelsey Acton's nine points.

The Trojan freshmen (13-1) won 47-23, as Abigail Green put up 18 points.

Bellaire      44 Forest Area      29

Katie Goodwin's 13 points led Bellaire as the Eagles pulled away in the second half for a 44-29 Ski Valley Conference victory over Forest Area.

Bellaire led 21-15 at halftime and was up eight going into the final quarter.

Kortni Birgy paced Forest Area with nine points and eight rebounds, while Emily Gonyer chipped in seven points and five steals. The Warriors (2-11) host Mesick on Monday.


Seven place at Central indoor meet

Seven Traverse City athletes placed at an indoor track and field meet held at Traverse City Central as part of the Michigan Indoor Track Series.

Only the shot put and high jump were contested at the meet, but TC athletes won three of four first place honors.

In the boys high jump, TC Central's Aaron Taylor was first, clearing 6'1", while Justin Bay was second.

Hannah Yancho won the girls high jump with a 4'4" effort.

In the shot put, Central's Johnny Piatek won with a throw of 45'9.5", while TC West's Nick Whiting was second with 44'2.5" and Central's Austin Plamondon and Adam Foster were third and fourth.
