ANN ARBOR — The Traverse Bay Blues opened up the rugby season with a successful road trip to Ann Arbor, coming back with a 33-15 victory over the University of Michigan alumni team.
The Blues led 33-0 at halftime before the Wolverines scored three late trys.
“I’m excited about how we played,” coach Matt Szatkiewicz said. “I’m also happy with our new guys.”
Kevin Kipke scored two trys, with single scores coming from Donald Welz, Dane Wenkel and Jimmy Turnbull.
Turnbull added four conversions.
The Blues (1-0) host Kalamazoo at the Civic Center at 1 p.m. Saturday, the first of three consecutive home matches.
