Fishing site along Au Sable reopens

OSCODA — A popular fishing site at Consumers Energy’s hydroelectric plant at Foote Dam on the Au Sable River has reopened following a construction project.

The site near Oscoda, about 140 miles north of Detroit, in Michigan’s northeastern Lower Peninsula had been closed for the work since May. It reopened Thursday, the unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. said.

The fishing site, which is used in particular during salmon and steelhead runs, is operated under a lease agreement. According to Consumers Energy, minor construction activity is expected to continue at the site, such as sign installation and cleanup.

Foote Dam was completed in 1917. The powerhouse includes three turbine-generators capable of producing about 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Consumers Energy and the state Department of Natural Resources announced plans for the project in 2012.
