Author to visit

SCOTTVILLE — Join author John F. O’Herron from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 9, as he talks about his new book “Up ‘N Atom Wednesday, Getting over the Hump” at the West Shore Community College Schoenherr Campus Center bookstore.

Historical Society

ELK RAPIDS — The Elk Rapids Historical Society will host Mardi Link, author of current bestseller, “Bootstrapper — From Broke to Badass on a Northern Michigan Farm” and “When Evil Came to Good Hart” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Elk Rapids Public Library. No sign up or fee required. Light refreshments provided.

TRAVERSE CITY — Horizon Books will host book signings by the following authors on Saturday, Oct. 12:

n Kenneth Wylie, co-author of “Possessed,” 2 to 4 p.m.

n Evelyn Harper, author of “The Wrath of Winter,” the sixth book in the Accidental Mystery Series, noon to 2 p.m.

History award

SCOTTVILLE — Sharon Bluhm has been recognized by The Historical Society of Michigan for her recent book “Manierre Dawson: Inventions of the Mind.”

Bluhm, a professor of English at West Shore Community College for more than 20 years, became interested in Dawson when she moved into the Dawson family’s home, south of Ludington, in 1977.

The award was presented at the 2013 State History Awards during its annual meeting and state history conference. Bluhm’s book was one of two award winners in the “Publications - private printing” category.
