Man dead in GT shooting

TRAVERSE CITY — A loud noise shook a normally quiet Long Lake Township neighborhood, and jostled sleeping residents in the middle of the night.

Neighbors who investigated the disturbance soon learned what had shattered their sleep: a gunshot inside a condominium at 4904 Black Bear Drive.

Other residents of the upscale Black Bear Farms subdivision looked outside from their beds to see emergency vehicles descending on the area late Friday night and into Saturday morning as authorities launched their investigation into the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man.

Authorities said a woman, 27, shot the man inside the dwelling about 11:30 p.m. The two were described as “acquaintances.”

Witnesses said they later watched authorities remove a small boy from the above-garage condo where the shooting occurred.

Lights inside the condo continued to glow Saturday afternoon.

A cluster of canned food sat inside the entrance of the residence, and a pizza box sat on the corner of a table in the kitchen, but no one answered the glass door.

Neighbors described the tenants as younger renters who frequently entertained visitors; a stream of unfamiliar cars and trucks often pulled up to the residence, they said.

But exactly who lived there, who died and who pulled the trigger remains unclear, as Grand Traverse Sheriff’s officials refused to provide anything other than scant details of the shooting more than 15 hours after it occurred.

Emergency officials rushed the man to Munson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Tom Bensley refused to comment further.

“Once we get all of our facts together we’ll be releasing more information,” Bensley said.

Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Bob Cooney said he did not authorize charges or warrants related to the shooting as of Saturday afternoon. He said investigators interviewed a suspect but did not arrest anyone.

“The public should know there’s no one in custody, but the suspect is known,” he said.

Cooney called the shooting a “domestic situation” and said the victim and suspect knew each other. He did not elaborate.
