Author visits Kalkaska library

KALKASKA — William Rapai is the next guest in the Kalkaska County Library’s Writers & Readers Speaker Series.

Rapai is author of “The Kirtland’s Warbler: The Story of a Bird’s Fight Against Extinction and the People Who Saved It.” He will share the story of the Kirtland’s Warbler and its quirky nesting habits at noon on Thursday, March 20, at the library, 247 S. Cedar St. To learn more, call 258-9411.

Art scholarships for Elk Rapids students

ELK RAPIDS — Continuing a tradition started in 2006, Art Rapids! will offer scholarships to Elk Rapids students pursuing studies in fine arts.

The senior scholarship is $1,000. It is for students planning to continue their education at an accredited college or institution with a major in fine arts.

Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students currently in grades eight through 11. This award provides support for fine art studies through private instruction or with arts organizations such as Artcenter Traverse City, Northwestern Michigan College, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and Interlochen.

An essay, portfolio and letter of recommendation must accompany applications for either scholarship.

TSO free concert set for Tuesday

TRAVERSE CITY — Join the Traverse Symphony Orchestra Civic String Ensembles for a free concert at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 18 at the City Opera House.

A wide variety of classical hits from composers ranging from Beethoven to Bartók will be featured.

Label meaning class scheduled

BENZONIA — Grow Benzie will offer “ Label Claims and What They Mean” from 6 to 8:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 18, presented by Chris Oberski, food compliance systems/regulatory affairs manager at Graceland Fruit of Frankfort.

Kingsley Cakes receives award

KINGSLEY — Kingsley Cakes has been awarded The Knot “Best of Weddings” for 2014 as chosen by their customers.

This is the fourth consecutive year, the custom cake shop has achieved this award. It also was selected as couples’ favorite on Wedding Wire for 2014.
