Should be more careful

Brad Van Dommelen should be more careful in his portrayal of public and private sector retirees. In the Dec. 21 edition of the Record-Eagle, while addressing opposition to the freeloading of festival organizers, he explains it away by saying, "... festival critics are a minority of mostly retired teachers and auto workers who live on pensions who don't have to worry about making a living."

Wow! Most pensioners in America worked 30 to 40 years supporting businesses he deifies, schools where he was educated, infrastructure he uses to travel and recreate, armed forces that serve America's (and his) interests throughout the world, and protection of those less fortunate. They did all of this while "worried about making a living." Through contracts negotiated in good faith, they were given hope of a short time of life free from that worry.

All over America people of his ilk have dashed that hope. Retirees have had their pensions reduced through increased taxes, rising health care costs and increased subsidies to the wealthy. His organization and high wage are subsidized by those folks.

Because of their ongoing subsidy to the business community and wealthy, many retirees continue to "worry about making a living."
