TRAVERSE CITY — Karen Kirt of Lake Leelanau didn’t win the 50K freestyle cross country ski race, but she sounded plenty strong at the finish.
“I feel refueled, refreshed, reenergized,” Kirt said.
Whether they won or just had fun, participants in the 38th annual North American Vasa Festival of Races at Timber Ridge Resort couldn’t stop raving about the fast, fast, fast trail conditions.
Hundreds of people came to race and from all over the country — as far south as Texas — to compete in varying lengths of classic and freestyle ski vents, as well as the competition’s first fat bike race. Eighteen waves of races ran throughout Saturday, with another four scheduled for today.
Participants were rewarded with a bit of sun that peeked through the clouds around midday and a sense of camaraderie with one another.
