MACOMB — Traverse City West won six weight divisions Saturday to capture a wrestling invitational at Macomb Lutheran.

The Titans — with just nine wrestlers — finished with 152 points.

Claiming titles were Vincent Priante (5-0) at 103, Jonah Jasman (5-0) at 125, Jared Farkas (5-0) at 140, Michael Lambert (4-0) at 145, Zac Provost (4-0) at 171 and James Peck (4-0) at 215.

Jasman won all five of his matches by pin. Priante took his five by technical fall, giving him 23 for the season. That breaks the state mark of 20.

Placing second were Corey Johanssen (4-1) at 103, Tyler Post (4-1) at 119 and Tyler Mathie (4-1) at 140.

West wrestles Central at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the team districts. The winner faces Rockford.

Elliotts, Chapple win league titles

Forest Area brothers Matt and Landon Elliott won their respective weights classes in the Mid-Michigan Conference wrestling championships at Manton.

Landon went 2-0 at 119 while Matt finished 2-0 at 125. It was Matt Elliott’s fourth consecutive league title. He now has 151 career wins.

Tyler Leffingwell took second at 130 and Brandon Ames third at 171.

Frankfort’s Jacob Chapple won the 135-pound class. The Panthers had five wrestlers place fourth — Ben Tiesworth at 103, Daymian Tabbert at 112, Brendan Kelly at 140, Brandon Coxe at 145 and Colten Ryder at 160.


Suttons Bay 72

St. Francis 57

Logan Mikesell scored 22 points while Aaron Orban added 17 points and a school record 28 rebounds as Suttons Bay defeated St. Francis 72-57 in a non-league game.

The Norsemen (8-3) led 33-26 at half.

Byron Bullough’s 29 points, six rebounds and five steals paced the Gladiators (2-7). Tanner Kenney added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

St. Francis won the JV game 56-51 as Matt Biggar scored 18.

St. Francis is at Grayling on Tuesday. Suttons Bay hosts Lake Leelanau St. Mary on Monday.

Kingsley 51

Frankfort 41

Two upsets in two nights.

Stacy Almquist scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Kingsley defeated Frankfort 51-41 in a Northwest Conference contest.

The Stags (5-5, 3-4) trailed by two entering the fourth quarter, 36-34, but outscored the Panthers 17-5 in the final eight minutes.

Almquist hit two 3-pointers in the quarter and 6 of 9 free throws, including five in a row. Jarid Lueck added 12 points and Nathan Schaar 11 for the Stags, who host Elk Rapids on Monday.

Frankfort (7-3, 5-2) was held to 13 second-half points. Connor Bradley netted 14 points and David Loney 10.

Forest Area 78

Mesick 54

Justin Burke’s 21 points, 16 rebounds and five assists sparked Forest Area to a 78-54 non-league win over Mesick.

Austin Vance added 19 points for the Warriors (6-4) while sophomore Trevor Vance contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Peter Roush netted 19 points and Jordan Calhoun 16 for Mesick.

McBain NMC 63

Northport 30

Mitch Perry scored 27 points as McBain Northern Michigan Christian defeated Northport 63-30 in a non-league game.

Jacob Brown posted a triple-double for Northport — 13 points, 10 rebounds, 11 blocks. Anthony Driver added nine points.

The Wildcats travel to Mesick on Tuesday.


Manistee 48

Frankfort 35

Manistee won the battle of unbeatens, topping Frankfort 48-35 in a rescheduled non-league game.

The Chippewas (12-0) led 24-17 at half.

Audrey Tomaszewski led Manistee with 12 points and six rebounds. Annie Fuller added nine points and five rebounds and Emma Burns nine points.

Mackenna Kelly scored 11 points for Frankfort.

Manistee hosts Roscommon on Monday.

Glen Lake 59

Buckley 25

Jordan Peplinski’s 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals led Glen Lake to a 59-25 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

McKenna Turril added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Lakers (7-5, 5-2), who host Kingsley on Tuesday. Kelly Bunek had nine points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals.

Ashley Carpenter netted eight points for Buckley.


Soo 4

TC Hounds 2

Nick Papandrea snapped a 2-2 tie with a goal at the 12:24 mark of the third period as the Soo Firehawks beat the Traverse City Hounds 4-2 at Big Bear Ice Arena.

Cody Anderson added a power-play goal less than four minutes later.

The Soo had taken a 2-0 on a pair of Andrew Holder goals in the second period.

The Hounds tied it early in the third as Dalton Gertsen and Jacob Gillis tallied. Alexander Grizzel and Cory Bussing assisted on Gertsen’s goal. Pat Rogowski drew the assist on the Gillis power-play goal.

The Hounds outshot the Firehawks 42-36.

On Friday night, the Hounds beat the Firehawks 5-4 in a shootout after scoring late in the second period and early in the third to tie it.

Tyler Thirlby cut the Soo lead to 4-3 at 17:11 of the second period and then Premysl Synek’s power-play goal 2:12 into the third period knotted it up.

In the shootout, Bryce Goulah stopped all four Firehawks’ shooters and Scott Luca and Alex Grizzel scored to secure the win.

Goulah made 26 saves through regulation and the overtime period.

Jacob Gillis and Josh Smith also scored for the Hounds.
