TRAVERSE CITY — An alley that runs from Wellington Street to Railroad Avenue south of East Eighth Street in the city’s developing Depot Neighborhood soon will have a new name.
Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region and HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corp. are working together to build 21 affordable, energy-efficient houses in the new neighborhood.
The alley must have an official street name in order for the eight homes planned to be built along the alley to have official Traverse City addresses, HomeStretch executive director William Merry said.
Habitat for Humanity and HomeStretch members pooled their ideas and took a vote, and the name Station Street won. Merry said it was the best option that keeps with the neighborhood’s railroad theme.
“The city requires it in order to provide addresses for the homes being built by HomeStretch and Habitat along the alley,” Merry said. “That was the best one. Everything else is named railroad around there.”
A request to name the alley Station Street is on the city commission’s Monday consent agenda.
