Community Newsmakers: 03/17/2013

Necole Flanigan was honored as Achiever of the Year during Goodwill Industries’ “In Unity with Community” luncheon held March 13 at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City. At one point homeless and living at the Goodwill Inn, She has since found employment and her own place to live. She is on the Dean’s List at Northwestern Michigan College, where she studies social work, and also volunteers in the community.


Bill Marsh Automative Group, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center’s Patriot Place were honored as Goodwill Partners for “exceptional leadership and commitment to changing lives.”


Food Rescue Riders received Volunteers of the Year honors. With their support, Goodwill has been able to rescue more than 2.5 million pounds of soon-to-be-dated food for distribution to the region’s food pantries in less than four years. Riders include Robert Shepherd, Craig Silliven, David Mahaffy, Jacob Newell, Gavin Meyer, Eugene Coffey and Josh Hollister.


Homer Nye and Becky Mang received the Mary Stanton Award recognizing individuals who personify the spirit of Goodwill and its mission to help people overcome barriers to independence.

The husband and wife co-founded Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan, and are also involved in other Goodwill programs, including Safe Harbor and the Poverty Reduction Initiative.
