Oleson is elected chairman of board

TRAVERSE CITY -- D.J. Oleson, vice-president of Oleson's Food Stores, was elected chairman of the board of directors for the Michigan Grocers Association.

Oleson, part of the fourth generation of the Oleson family to run the Traverse City-based food store chain, has served on the state association's board since 2002 and on its executive committee since 2007. Oleson's joined the MGA in 1934 and is its oldest member, and was honored during the association's fall conference in Traverse City in mid-September. The association represents 900 chain and independent retail stores around the state.

Oleson has been vice-president of the company for the past 12 years, and runs the family's 500-plus head buffalo ranch south of Traverse City that supplies the Oleson's stores and several Michigan restaurants. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Central Michigan University.

The Oleson's chain includes stores in Traverse City, Manistee, Charlevoix and Petoskey. The family launched its grocery business in 1926.

Green workshops set in Grand Rapids

TRAVERSE CITY -- The West Michigan Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will conduct a pair of workshops on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and concepts.

A Nov. 20 workshop targets home owners, residential design and construction professionals and others involved in implementing the LEED for Homes Rating System. A workshop on Dec. 11 is for designers, contractors, service professionals, real estate agents and related groups to learn about LEED standards and other green building ideas.

Both events will be held at Grand Rapids Community College and are from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration information is available at www.usgbcwm.org or by calling (616) 234-4946.

Course on MIOSHA rules offered in TC

TRAVERSE CITY -- A 10-hour course on Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) regulations for the construction industry will be offered Dec. 2 and 3 in Traverse City.

The course will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the Cherry Tree Inn. It will assist in development of accident prevention plans under MIOSHA rules, include an overview of MIOSHA inspection procedures and review frequent violations in the construction industry.

The seminar costs $150 per person and includes lunch and course materials. Register by calling (517) 371-1550 or through e-mail at atruss@agcmichigan.org.

Business expo is set for this week

TRAVERSE CITY -- More than 140 area businesses, nonprofits and other organizations will take part in the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and 2010 Economic Forecast breakfast.

The event will be held Tuesday at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme. The economic forecast breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m., featuring keynote speaker Patrick Anderson of Anderson Economic Group, a former deputy state budget director. The business expo will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
