Northern Notes: Guardian angel mystery

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

In August, Julie Smith, of Traverse City, went out for dinner with some of her co-workers and left her car downtown because the group changed locations several times and used a van to get around. Later, the driver took everyone home individually.

Julie, who prefers to have her car at home, decided to ride her bike downtown and retrieve her car (the bike will fit in the back of her car).

"Two houses away from home, I turned the corner of Spruce Street onto Seventh Street ... and fell on the grass on the other side of the street," Julie wrote. "I do not know if I hit a pot hole, a rock or the curb."

As Julie was crawling to the grass, a lady in a big dark SUV stopped and asked if she needed help. By that time Julie had realized that her ankle was badly broken and admitted that, yes, she certainly could use help.

"This nice lady helped me hop into the front passenger seat of her SUV," Julie wrote. "We then went the one and a half blocks to the emergency room at Munson Medical Center. This wonderful lady got out, went inside and said she needed a wheelchair for a lady with a bad ankle. The staff came out immediately and by the time I was being wheeled inside, her vehicle was gone."

Julie has no clue who she was, but the lady was definitely her "guardian angel." Julie broke three bones in her ankle, had surgery and now is unable to put weight on her ankle for 10 to 12 weeks.

"For a not-so-great situation, I am forever grateful that there are still people who will stop and help someone in need," Julie wrote.

Third Level Crisis Intervention Center Inc. hosted a skateboarding event in August that was to take place at the Cheboygan Skate Park, but, because of rain, was moved to the Youth Center.

"We would like to extend a thank-you to Deb Turnbull, director of the Youth Center, for being such a gracious host at the last minute," a letter from Third Level stated. "A huge thank-you also goes to our sponsors, Big Boy, BC PIzza, Shepler's, Glen's Market, Cheboygan Bowling Alley, Kmart, Family Video, Kingston Theater, Quick Check, Arby's, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, the Arnold Line and It's About You for their prize donations which helped make the event a huge success."
