Those who drive past Barbara McCann's Northport home on M-22 often comment on how nice her yard looks. Even though she invites them to stop, few take her up on the offer.
Barbara's gardens, along with those of four other Northport residents, were on display during the second Northport Garden Tour, a fundraiser for the Northport Dogs on Parade, and Barbara considered it an honor to be included on the tour.
"The guests' compliments were very kind and I truly enjoyed sharing my passion with those who visited," Barbara wrote.
Encouraged by comments she received while participating in the tour and inspired by a story in the Record-Eagle about Bob LeRoy's garden in Lake Ann and how he invites the public to enjoy its beauty, Barbara McCann posted signs that invite passersby to stop and enjoy her gardens.
"Now, people are stopping nearly every day, taking pictures and I've even had a call from an assisted living center that would like to bring some residents to take a look," Barbara wrote. "My gardens will be open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day. There is no admission, but if you enjoy the view, please consider making a donation to Northport Dogs on Parade or the Northport Fireworks Fund."

Linda and Larry Bloomfield, of Davison, dined at the Apache Trout Grill during the Cherry Festival and enjoyed the recent renovations, especially the bay view room. While there, Linda discovered the diamond had fallen out of the setting of her new ring. The ring has special significance as it was a recent surprise for the couple's 30th wedding anniversary and Linda was frantic as she searched for the gem.
"To my utter dismay, I was unable to find the diamond," Linda wrote. "I was very disappointed, but left my name and number with Glen, the manager."
The couple revisited all the places they had been earlier that day hoping to find the diamond, but were unsuccessful.
"Imagine my surprise and delight when Glen called me two days later to say that someone had found a diamond in the parking lot and turned it in," Linda wrote. "Everyone said that it would be a one-in-a-million chance to ever see it again. Due to the honesty and integrity of the family who found it and Glen, I am thrilled to have my diamond back."

Albert Ockert, president of the Northwest Michigan Chapter of Korean War Veterans of Traverse City, wrote on behalf of the organization to thank area residents for their generosity during this year's "Rose of Sharon" fundraiser. The money raised goes to help veterans and military personnel.
