Northern Notes: Random act of kindness

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

Barbara Riehl, of Starvation Lake, was shopping at the Tom's Food Market in Acme on June 28, when a young man who was bagging approached her with a dozen yellow roses as she was unloading her groceries onto the conveyor belt.

When he told Barbara the roses were for her, she told him there must be a mistake because she hadn't bought any flowers.

"When he said that they were for me, he added that they were already paid for," Barbara wrote. "He said the female donor wanted to remain anonymous and the cashier added that the mysterious donor had pointed at me when she handed the flowers to him."

Although she admired the gorgeous blooms, Barbara continued to insist that there must be a mistake, but the bagger told her that he thought it was a random act of kindness.

"At any rate, my family and I have enjoyed their beauty, so many thanks to the donor for the lovely surprise," Barbara wrote.

President Rick Lahmann wrote on behalf of the Leland Michigan Chamber of Commerce to thank all the guests of the Leland Wine & Food Festival for their attendance and patronage. Proceeds benefit many community organizations and projects including, but not limited to, the July fireworks, Main Street tree planting, village flowers and the Leland Education Foundation.

"I also want to express my admiration and appreciation to our primary Wine & Food Festival coordinators Cris and Kathy Telgard, Kate Vilter, Beth Richter and Powell "Smitty" Smith," Rick wrote. "Thanks especially to Cris and Kathy for their 24 years of service to the event as they hand over chairmanship to Kate. We have a wonderful group of volunteers. Over 100 people work to make this event happen for the community (and) it is appreciated. Thank you."

Antrim County Democrats recently sponsored their second food drive of the year. Forty-one volunteers helped make the drive successful and collected food and money at Glen's in Bellaire and Mancelona, and at the Village Market in Elk Rapids.

The group was able to send $692 to each of the four largest pantries in the county, Bellaire Community Pantry, Good Samaritan, Mancelona Lighthouse Pantry and the Mancelona Pantry. They also sent $200 to the Elk Rapids Pantry and the food collected also was delivered to the local pantries.
