Northern Notes: Lynch memories sought

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

What unique gift would make your mother's 90th birthday special?

Karen (Lynch) Holcomb decided that she would like to fill a memory book with all the wonderful heartwarming stories that make up her mother's extraordinary life. She would like to gift her mother, Alberta Lynch, with the book on her birthday, which is July 5.

Alberta began her teaching career in 1940 after graduating from County Normal. She spent many years attending summer school at Central Michigan University until she reached her goal of attaining a master's degree.

Alberta's first teaching assignment was a one-room school in Manton where she taught all eight grades. She moved back to her hometown of Buckley in 1943, where she taught at both the elementary and high school levels. In 1955, she moved to Traverse City and taught fifth grade at Oak Park School until she retired in 1977.

"To this day, whenever she meets any of her former students, she can always remember their names and something special about each of them," Karen wrote. "I know all of you know the beautiful smile my mom gets on her face when she talks of the memories throughout her life and the joys you all brought her."

Karen is asking relatives, friends and past students to take some time to write down a favorite memory or special time spent with her mother that she can add to this unique collection of memories. Karen needs to receive these recollections no later than July 1 in order to have time to put the collection together. She is encouraging everyone to use as many sheets of paper as they need, but just on one side of 81/2 inch by 11 inch sheets of typing or specialty paper, please.

Memories may be sent to Karen Holcomb, 3003 Garfield Road N. Traverse City, MI 49686; or e-mailed to klholcomb5684@att.net.

The Traverse City North Stars sponsored a "Can Do" food drive for the Father Fred Foundation during their playoff series this season.

Fans were able to choose between purchasing a ticket that included a $2 contribution to the foundation's food pantry or dropping off non-perishable food items and receiving a discounted ticket price. The drive resulted in nine boxes of food and more than $300 in cash for the foundation.

"We hoped for a longer playoff run this year, but are still very happy with the way we could support such a great charity as the Father Fred Foundation," said Steve Fournier, owner/president of the team. "The spirit and impact of the foundation are shining examples of what makes living in this area so great."
