911 lines service out in 5 north Michigan counties

Associated Press

---- — GAYLORD — Authorities say 911 emergency phone service is out in at least five rural counties in Michigan’s northeastern Lower Peninsula.

The outage Wednesday afternoon affects Alpena, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle and Roscommon counties. State 911 administrator Harriet Miller-Brown says it’s limited to areas with the 989 area code.

She says people with emergencies should try dialing 911 and if it doesn’t work, head to the nearest police or fire station.

Miller-Brown says the apparent cause is a fiber line was cut between Roscommon and Saginaw.

WPBN-WTOM television says a crew from AT&T is at the scene.

Dispatcher Debbie Allen in Montmorency County says they have at least partial service. She says 911 calls from neighboring Otsego County are coming to her office. None have involved a serious emergency.
