Snyder to make another trek to Asia

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder plans to leave next week on another economic-development trip to Asia as part of an effort to boost Michigan tourism and investment.

The Republican governor said he looks forward to building on relationships garnered during his first two trips. Snyder, who announced plans for the trip to China and Japan earlier this year, also led trips to the region in 2011 and 2012.

“We had to essentially start from scratch with the first meeting in terms of official relationships,” Snyder said. His predecessor, Democrat Jennifer Granholm, didn’t visit China as governor.

Inmate attacks, hurts two jail deputies

MUSKEGON — Two West Michigan jail deputies were injured during an attack by a 26-year-old prisoner who used concrete chunks in a sock as a club.

Sheriff Dean Roesler says Thursday afternoon’s attack in the Muskegon County Jail was without provocation.

The Muskegon Chronicle and WZZM-TV report that it occurred near a second-floor housing unit. The deputies are described as 25-year and 19-year veterans.

Roesler said the plastic was used as “stabbing devices,” but the deputies were not stabbed. They were released Thursday night from an area hospital.

The prisoner has been in the jail since October, awaiting trial on charges of operating a methamphetamine lab and being a habitual offender.

Officials asks bow hunters for deer help

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP — Deer in one mid-Michigan community have been targeted by officials hoping to reduce a rising number of crashes involving the animals and damage from their incessant foliage munching.

Meridian Township wants bow hunters to take part in a managed harvest of deer on 21 publicly owned properties, the Lansing State Journal reported Friday.

The managed deer harvest is set for Sept. 21-22 and from Oct. 1 through Dec. 1.

“People are saying they used to be able to plant flowers and now they can’t,” said Jane Greenway, Meridian Township’s Parks and Land Management coordinator.
