Lawmaker wants to change fireworks law

Associated Press

---- — LANSING — A lawmaker has proposed changes following a slew of complaints, safety concerns and confusion about a law that made powerful fireworks legal in Michigan.

The bills introduced Thursday are from Democratic state Rep. Harold Haugh of Roseville, who previously led the effort for the law. One change would allow communities to ban powerful fireworks between 12 a.m. to 8 a.m. around national holidays.

Haugh says the proposed changes aim to provide additional local control, more reasonable time limits on usage and to ensure firefighters are receiving the funds necessary.
