TRAVERSE CITY — Gov. Rick Snyder says Michigan should review permit fees it charges overweight trucks that contribute to damaging the state’s roads.
The Detroit Free Press reported that Snyder’s comments were in response to a report Sunday by the newspaper showing $50 permits are a bargain versus those in neighboring states.
The Republican governor spoke to the newspaper Wednesday at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars. He says it’s premature to say fees should be increased.
Two state House lawmakers, however, say fees should go up.
The Michigan Department of Transportation raised $4.5 million from about 104,000 special permits for oversize and overweight trucks in the 2011-12 fiscal year.
The newspaper’s report also showed overweight truck fines go to the local library system where fines are issued, not road repairs.
