---- — LANSING — U.S. flags within the Michigan Capitol complex have been lowered to honor a former state senator who died this week.
David Plawecki, 65, of Dearborn was a Democratic senator for the 12th Senate District from 1971 to 1982. He was the youngest state senator elected in Michigan history at age 22.
Gov. Rick Snyder, who ordered that flags be lowered through Thursday, says Plawecki was respected and made government more open.
He helped enact the state’s open meetings and freedom of information acts along with a law letting employees access their own personnel records. Plawecki later was deputy director of the former state Department of Labor and Economic Growth.
He ran for governor in 1982 and lost in a primary to Jim Blanchard, who would go on to be governor.
