Trial ordered for Ohio suspect in 3 slayings from 1972

MONROE (AP) — An Ohio prison inmate has been ordered to stand trial in Michigan for three slayings from 1972.

Laurence Lamont is charged with murder in the deaths of three men in Monroe County. Police say the victims were abducted in Michigan and Ohio before being killed in Michigan. Another suspect in the investigation died behind bars.

After a five-day hearing, the Monroe Evening News says a judge found probable cause Thursday to send the 69-year-old Lamont to trial.

Lamont has been in an Ohio prison for decades for other crimes. A state police detective had trouble identifying him in court but his ex-wife, Brenda Carroll Blum, had no problem. She called Lamont a “monster.”

Lamont’s attorney challenged the use of confessions as evidence. A trial is expected in 2014.
