Closed state prison to reopen in Detroit

DETROIT — A Michigan prison surrounded by a Detroit neighborhood will reopen as a temporary detention center for anyone arrested in the city.

The planned summer opening of the Mound Correctional Facility is part of an agreement between the city and state. Officials said the facility will hold 200 people and allow the city to close five lockup facilities currently staffed by officers.

“This partnership agreement between the city and the state is a significant one that will allow Detroit police officers currently assigned to the lockups to return to neighborhood patrols,” Mayor Dave Bing said.
