Canoers and kayakers hit river in event
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP (AP) — A 160-mile, 57-hour paddle sport adventure race is underway in Michigan.
Dozens of canoers and kayakers kicked things off Saturday on the Red Cedar River in Ingham County’s Meridian Township.
The Campus to Coast race is organized by Michigan State University’s Outdoors Club. It includes 21 teams of Michigan State students and Lansing-area residents as well as a few students from Indiana University.
Organizers tell the Lansing State Journal (http://on.lsj.com/ZmDfJM) they expect choppy waterways and some bad weather.
Contestants likely will encounter rain as they move through Grand Rapids this weekend.
Transportation will be available at checkpoints throughout the race for those who need it.
Two campsites also are available for racers to stop during the weekend, though night paddling is permitted.
Those who finish receive a commemorative pint glass.
