State: Flash drive with personal information taken

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State health officials say a flash drive containing personal information of more than 2,500 people was stolen earlier this year.

The Michigan Department of Community Health said Thursday that an encrypted laptop was taken in late January along with the flash drive, which wasn't encrypted. The theft was from an employee of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman's Office.

The department says it learned of the breach Feb. 3 and made notifications this week to those affected. The theft was reported to police, but the computer and flash drive remain missing.

The department says the flash drive contained personal information of living and deceased individuals, including names and addresses. It says more than 1,500 records also included either a Social Security number or a Medicaid identification number.
