ArtPrize ups the ante for 2014

DETROIT (AP) — Michigan’s annual ArtPrize competition announced changes to its awards Thursday, doubling the value of the top prize awarded by art experts.

The Juried Grand Prize will increase to $200,000 to match the amount for the prize selected by public vote. The competition also is doubling the number of finalists from a “Top 10” to a “Final 20” in the competition’s second round of voting.

“The public will be able to peer over at what the jury is doing,” Christian Gaines, executive director of ArtPrize, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview about the new award structure. “Likewise, the jury will be able to peer over at what the public is voting on.”

Also new this year, artists will submit work in one of four categories: 2-D, 3-D, Time Based or Installation. Eight $20,000 category awards will be given out, including four decided by public vote and four decided by an expert jury. In total, $560,000 will be awarded.

The sixth annual event runs Sept. 24 to Oct. 12 in Grand Rapids. As in previous years, an artist could win both a public vote and a juried prize.

ArtPrize has helped put Michigan’s second-largest city on the international art map, thanks in part to public voting done online.
