---- — ROYAL OAK — An elementary school teacher was found shot to death in his suburban Detroit home hours before police located the suspect’s lifeless body in another house about eight miles away.
Harry Berkowitz was identified Tuesday by Birmingham Public Schools officials as a slaying victim found in his home in Oakland County’s Village of Franklin.
Berkowitz taught at West Maple Elementary in nearby Bloomfield Hills.
Police in Franklin did not immediately release the name of the man found dead and in a release only called the death “suspicious in nature.” Authorities did not offer a possible motive for the slaying or indicate whether they had recovered a weapon.
A lead in the case prompted Franklin police to contact police in Royal Oak, who quickly surrounded a house in that city where a suspect was believed to have fled.
After several hours, a SWAT team sent in a robot.
